Adaptability, Creativity, and Critical Thinking – the Foundation of Competencies for the Digital Age

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of developing in students the cross-cutting skills and key “human-cantered” 
competencies of the future that remain beyond the reach of artificial intelligence. The focus is placed on 
harnessing the synergistic potential of emerging technologies and integrating them into the educational 
environment in response to the challenges of the 21st Century.
 Skills and competencies such as adaptability, creativity, communication, digital literacy, emotional 
intelligence, teamwork, critical thinking, rational decision-making, and lifelong learning are brought to the 
forefront. These qualities cannot be replicated or scaled by algorithms, and despite the unprecedented progress 
of technology, their value will only continue to grow. It is these abilities that will shape how humanity coexists 
with technology in the era of Industry 5.0. They will constitute a competitive advantage for workers across all 
professional fields. This highlights the need to balance human creativity and technological precision, calling 
for an integrated approach to their development within the framework of school reform in Ukraine.
 The article analyzes studies by Ukrainian and international scholars devoted to this issue, and outlines the 
unresolved aspects of the problem. The aim of the article is clearly formulated. The importance of students 
acquiring cross-cutting skills and key competencies relevant to the Industry 5.0 era is substantiated. Definitions, 
essential characteristics, and components of these competencies are provided, and the educational potential 
of technologies for their effective development is examined. Appropriate didactic and methodological tools 
are proposed, with examples of how to foster adaptability, emotional intelligence, teamwork, communication, 
creativity and innovation, critical thinking, and decision-making in students. Finally, the article outlines 
prospects for further research on this topic.
