Abstract

The article analyzes a problem of identity, questioning the integrity of the human personality in a fragmented social reality. It is underlined that for Ukraine identity is a self-reflection on the way to European choice. European identity  today reveals itself in political and economic life on the basis of clearly express national and cultural diversity of the EU states. It is shown that in philosophy the formation and popularization of the concept of identity is a consequence of the development of the Modern philosophical and political thought which radically changes a personal understanding of its own place in the world, and the role of self-awareness in human life. However, a result
of the raise of a concept of personal identity in Modern philosophy developed the knowledge of individuality. In this context, identity is understood as a constantly changing process of self-determination which is greatly influenced by the free choice of the will. Personal self-identification becomes a universal condition for recognition. It is noted that the awareness of self-identity created certain frameworks of existence that helps an individual to navigate in all the diversity of the world. From this point of view, identity becomes a condition for the self-identification in the society.
In the times of globalization, the preservation of national identities is actualized in the context of cosmopolitanism.
National identity encompasses a subjective sense of belonging to a national state, it is related to a concept of a state, while ethnic identity is based on a personal feelings about origin, family heritage and cultural memory. National identity is not given from birth, but is a personal choice about belonging to a specific to political entity. In contrast to ethnic identity, national identity is more arbitrary. A state plays an  important role in ensuring the national integration of all versions of national identities into a single conceptual frame.
