The article investigates the formation of national consciousness among students in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as a crucial factor for educational and societal advancement. National consciousness in Chinese research is conceptualized through cultural, political, social, and emotional identities, emphasizing its role in the cohesion of a multiethnic society. The cultural identity perspective highlights the preservation of traditions, language, history, and arts, which form the foundation of the nation’s cultural integrity. Political identity is framed as essential for fostering patriotism, loyalty to national interests, and understanding the necessity of collective development. Social identity focuses on students' active participation in societal processes and their contribution to constructing a unified national community. Emotional identity underscores the value of national pride, solidarity, and empathy toward fellow citizens, reflecting the deeper emotional ties that bind individuals to their nation.
The study explores diverse approaches to cultivating national consciousness, including engagement in state and community programs, educational strategies, and social initiatives. Noteworthy examples, such as the “Understanding China” course and the “Week of Chinese Wind Music”, showcase efforts to integrate national culture and historical awareness into the educational framework. Furthermore, students’ involvement in volunteer programs, cultural exchanges, and environmental campaigns demonstrates their role in fostering national pride and promoting cross-ethnic understanding. These initiatives encourage collective responsibility and emphasize the integration of local and national values.
Particular attention is paid to the challenges posed by globalization, which necessitate strengthening cultural autonomy and national identity to maintain international competitiveness. The article concludes that fostering national consciousness is instrumental in enhancing social unity, bridging ethnic divides, and sustaining the PRC’s cultural and societal development on both national and global scales.
