The article explores giftedness as the ability to be different and to transcend the boundaries of one’s own “self”. It argues that the foundation of giftedness lies in the creative power of developed imagination, which serves as a fundamental force of human consciousness. The study reveals the intersubjective nature of creativity and its reliance on interaction with other people as co-creators. It is suggested that giftedness is creativity that has become a habit.
The nature of productive imagination and creativity is defined by intersubjectivity. In the ability to be different, giftedness manifests the universal essence of human existence, which can adapt to the meaning of new situations rather than impose previously acquired behavioral patterns. Such a “gift” becomes the basis of everyday activity, shaping one’s attitude toward the world and transforming into a driving force of character – a habit. In this sense, giftedness is creativity integrated into daily life, becoming its organic part.
Giftedness allows us not only to see what a person has become but also to imagine what they could become, defying the pressure of the “crowd” or the dominant “spirit of the age”. Giftedness is neutralized when it is adapted to the conditions of the social environment, reducing its role to mere adjustment to existing norms. However, the everyday world becomes noticeable only when its functions fail. In such moments, it becomes strange, and giftedness emerges as a signal of the Other’s intrusion into the routine continuity of life. It is perceived as a deviation, reflecting the weaknesses and dysfunctions of society as a whole and the educational
system in particular.
In an attempt to “normalize” this “dysfunction”, society seeks to adapt giftedness to familiar reality. However, this naturalization requires overcoming and cultural integration. Culture involves not a confrontation between the familiar and the unfamiliar but a constant transition between them. In the cultural horizon, giftedness retains the right to remain hidden, preserving the possibility of human freedom, which allows one not to conform to empirical demands but to create new opportunities for the world and oneself, to be the Other
