Zygmunt Bauman’s Posmodern Concept of Education

The article discusses the concept of education of Zygmunt Bauman – famous sociologist and philosopher. The researcher considers the influence of social conditions of education in the era, which he calls “liquid
modernity”. This is the state of society in times of late capitalism, which is characterized by variability, uncertainty, global mobility and superfluidity. Modern education has adapted the individual to the social order, while
the feature of the “liquid” Postmodern is the variability of the social order, which makes it impossible to form
any logical action for choosing life strategies. The condition of adaptation of the individual to life is speed: the
individual has to reject the formation of needs and habits in order to survive in the world of quick changes. This
leads to the “fast consumption” of education, for example, Zygmunt Bauman characterizes “the consumption
of university” as a sign of consumerism inherent in late capitalism. The reason is “bureaucratic logic”, which transfers management methods of efficiency and control from factories and stores to educational institutions,
treating them as a “liquid industry”. This threatens the principles of basic education, intellectual ideals of
learning and academic freedom, and can lead to the loss of educational goals. The crisis of education rises as
a result of Postmodern social transformations. According to Zygmunt Bauman, education is at the same time a
means of overcoming the crisis, because education is entrusted with the mission of preparing the individual for
life and forming life strategies that will enable him to adapt to social reality.
