Abstract

The article presents an interdisciplinary analysis of the integration of virtual reality (VR) and
augmented reality (AR) technologies into choreographic art, focusing on the intersection between digital innovation and traditional dance forms. It explores VR/AR as tools for reconstructing, preserving, and
popularizing choreographic heritage, while assessing their impact on bodily presence, performance
practice, and pedagogical strategies. The study examines modern television projects, festivals, and
performances that incorporate multimedia elements – such as motion capture, animation, and virtual
scenography – creating new formats of interaction between the performer and the audience. Special
attention is given to the educational potential of immersive technologies, including dance composition
modeling, 360-degree video environments, and mobile applications that provide real-time visual feedback.
Based on both Ukrainian and international case studies (e.g., “Baron Munchausen”, “Dragon Songs”,
“Global Choreography” and “Dancing with Myself”), the article identifies the artistic benefits of digital
integration: expanded stage space, enhanced narrative depth, and preservation of authentic movement.
At the same time, it highlights key risks, such as the reduction of physical interaction, the erosion of
performative embodiment, and the replacement of live experience with digital simulation. The authors
emphasize the urgent need for scientifically grounded, culturally sensitive approaches to implementing
VR and AR in choreographic practice and education. Methodological recommendations are proposed that
take into account the specificity of folk choreography and the imperative to safeguard intangible cultural
heritage within a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
