The article analyzes the problem of emotional burnout, reveals the essence of this concept. The ap
proaches of leading scientists to the assessment of this phenomenon in the “descriptive period” when emo
tional burnout was manifested mainly in the “field practice” and the “empirical period” were determined. The
attention is focused on the fact that it was the development of diagnostic tools for a comprehensive assessment
of this problem that determined the boundary between the “descriptive” and “empirical” periods of the rel
evant research. The essence of two main approaches of researchers in determining the signs of emotional burn
out (productive and procedural) is revealed. Within the first approach, the scientific environment distinguishes
one-factor, two-factor, three-factor, four-factor models. From the standpoint of the second- the interpretation
of the features of emotional burnout as a process is carried out according to certain stages that unfold over
time and have certain characteristics. Exploring the complexity and aggressiveness of emotional burnout in
relation to the psychological, physical, emotional sphere of a person, we emphasize the need to find effective
ways to prevent and correct this phenomenon. It is also emphasized that the driving force of the prevention of
professional burnout is the process of self-development of the individual.
It is noted that at present, emotional burnout is not classified as a disease, since it is mainly attributed to
a set of stressful problems associated with difficulties in maintaining a normal standard of living, which causes
interest in burnout not only for researchers-psychologists, social workers and other specialists. At the end of
the work the relevant conclusions are made.
