The article analyzes the problem of identity, which is the basis of the existence of a nation and
a person. It is noted that each nation exists due to connections and relations that are formed in the
process of ethnic development, are regulated by traditions and norms of behaviour and are improved
as the original national culture, language and mentality are formed and developed. Historical and
cultural determinants of national self-awareness are the memory of the past and traditions of the
people, their customs, as well as traditions recorded in oral and written form. The article highlights
and characterizes the most important sources of national identity. In the context of psychology, identity
demonstrates a complex configuration of the personality structure, which combines the evaluation of
others in relation to oneself, the evaluation of oneself in relation to the evaluation of others, and one's
own evaluation, and that is in constant change and development. The problem of identity formation
in philosophy, sociology, cultural studies is considered in the plane of the phenomena of national and
socio-cultural development and intercultural interaction. It is shown that an important factor in the
formation of the national identity of an individual is proper education and upbringing. Education
should focus on the development of the state concept of national identity. The levels of its affirmation
are self-identification, self-awareness and self-determination. National identity involves the formation
of a national outlook, national culture, language, national idea, and national values in young people.
These factors are related to national dignity. It is an awareness of the value, significance and identity
of one's own nation in the community of other nations. Modern Ukrainian youth considers it necessary
to build a state based on the principles of equal opportunities, social justice, the rule of law and
the national idea for the revival and prosperity of Ukraine. The genetic matrix of Ukrainian identity
carries the codes of struggle, freedom, love for the land, language, and culture of its people.
